A lesson in agency for the public...
It never fails to amaze me how few consumers have a clear understanding of agency relationships. It is a pretty simple concept, muddied no doubt by the countless lawyers that must prepard documents with which to protect us and our brokers, but simple nonetheless. Why is it that so few people have an uderstanding of how WE get paid? A number of times in my years in the business, a buyer has "pumped me for information" then gone and purchased a home directly from the listing agent, truly thinking that they are saving money. We try to explain this in our homebuying seminars, but this is a venue for people that have already decided that they'd like to get educated about the homebuying process. Any thoughts regarding how we as an industry can demystify AGENCY to the public?

I made up my own flyer, including the NAR's explanation of Buyer Agency and a more "user friendly" explanation of Buyer Agency that I have developed over many, many conversations with homebuyers and how they process information. One of the things I put in the flyer is an explanation that it will NOT save money for them to buy from the SELLER'S agent, and may indeed cost more.
Hi, Brendan. One of the things I've learned from my training as a writer is to compare the abstract hard-to-understand concept to something that's concrete and easy to understand and that the reader is probably already familiar with. Hope this helps.........Kay
